Blues has Western Roots
It is always said that blues music originated from the African continent and its original inhabitants. That, obviously, is some ignorant bullshit. It is about time to truly give credit where credit is due. It is Western civilization which enabled the emergence of blues. When the African continent became popular as a source for work power, its people got involved -and will never be unattached from it- in cultural movements that had a far bigger reach than ever before. The 'menselijke maat' was lost in this first step into modernity. Enslavement was one thing, mass production another. Modernity, an invention of the West, created and keeps on creating an atmosphere which touches people in a substantially different way than ever before. Thus blues music as we know it came to be: new inhabitants of the West getting confronted with an overwhelming culture shock and responding to it from their freshly-lost roots. There was and there is no way back. Everything is infested, as globalization helped the Western roots become present everywhere. No matter what cross-breeding and mixing, changing and overtaking of different cultures will happen, we cannot get rid of those roots in a globalized world. Thus the blues will be heard in every corner of the world.
